Portofino is a tiny, but extraordinarily beautiful fishing village nestled at the base of the cliffs in one of the most scenic Italian Riviera ports. Frequented by tourists and celebrities from all over the world, due to its lovely location and the Italian Riviera’s sunny climate, Portofino is one of the most famous Italian Riviera hot spots to visit. It is truly a remarkable destination perhaps best known for it’s historically preserved colorfully hued facades of fisherman’s dwellings. This classy resort village is tucked into the side of a small promontory with a small, naturally deep water harbor that had been loved by the ancient Romans and called Portus Delphini, or dolphin’s harbor. From the ancient name eventually came the name Portofino.
Today, the miniature bay of Portofino teems with boats, from stunning yachts to pleasure boat, to fishing boats seemingly in tribute to the village's memories of old. Although accommodations in Portofino are limited, there are a handful of splendid luxury accommodations in the form of villas and incredible hotels. Dining in Portofino is a wonderful experience; the restaurants specialize in tantalizing seafood dishes, and one of the local specialties that must be experienced is a pasta topped with a delectable pesto sauce (made with olive oil, basil and other herbs, a touch of garlic, a dash of cheese, either pecorino or parmesan, and a dose of finely ground pine nuts. Delicious!)
For trekkers, there is a dramatically stunning route from Portofino to the nearby town of San Fruttuoso where well kept footpaths, leading alongside tomp l’oeil facades of Santa Margherita Ligure, afford the most extraordinary views. If a near two mile trek sounds a bit intimidating, Portofino’s Via Roma offers visitors a more relaxing option. Here, luxury fashion boutiques, jewelry shops and fascinating art galleries line the flagstone streets. Another more peaceful option includes strolling from the town’s square (Piazzetta) up the hill towards the charming Church of San Giorgio, from which one can then head towards a spectacular lookout point from Portofino’s Punto del Capo where the Portofino lighthouse awaits.
